Soccer – markets and betting strategies

Soccer is a punter’s dream sports when it comes to online betting as bettors can find dozens of matches and events from all around the world anytime they log in; 24/7 and more if it existed. Popularity of the sport has definitely grown in Australia as the audience base for Hyundai A league grows every season. Although the Socceroos, Australia’s national football team hasn’t been able to stamp their mark on international football, Aussies definitely do not hold back while supporting their National team in World Cups and international friendlies. Soccer is a ‘World game’ and the entire world bets on it.

Soccer Match betting (1X2)

Unlike many other sports like Aussie Rules or Rugby, the chances of win, loss or draw are all highly possible in soccer making betting make interesting. Match betting is a 3 way market and the simplest form of betting in soccer; here a player bets on either one of the side to win or a match to end in draw. A typical betting sheet for this market may look like

  • (1)Sydney F.C. 2.05
  • (X)Draw 3.40
  • (2)Perth Glory 3.60

Generally, a market favourite will have lower odds and the underdog is given better odds to give bettors value for their risk. In the above example, it seems clear Perth Glory are the underdogs but it does not necessarily mean that they will lose. Thorough research is necessary while match betting on head to head statistics of each team including their current injuries.

Soccer Handicap Markets

Most bookies offer handicap markets to level up the odds by adding and subtracting number of goals on both sides. In this market, the final score in terms of bet is determined by the actual goals scored by the team plus/minus whatever the goal addition or deduction is. The handicap market of a soccer game may look like

  • Sydney F.C. 4.00 (-1.0 goals)
  • Handicap Draw 3.60 (-1.0 goals)
  • Perth Glory 1.67 (+1.0 goals)

In this case, the starting score of the match will be Sydney F.C. : 0, Perth Glory: 1.

Soccer Over/Under Goals

This market is also available in many other sports but is mostly popular in soccer betting as relatively less number of points is scored therefore; over/under goals market is popular. This market bets on the total number of goals in a soccer match and whether the total will be over or under certain number of goals. The betting line for over/under market may typically look like

  • Under 2.5 Goals – 1.91
  • Over 2.5 Goals – 2.50

Various strategies can be used while placing Over/Under bets. If the attacking stance of both sides or at least one of the teams are strong and are known for scoring lots of goals, it would be logical to predict many goals to be scored in the match. These sorts of betting types often come with a wide range of markets. In this case they will be in the form of the amount of goals the spread is set upon. The most common will be 1.5, 2.5 and even 3.5 with each market offering up more risk than the other; the general trend will be the odds increase the more goals you are looking to bet over. With each game it’s important to select the market that will yield the greatest amount of profit, i.e. which game will comfortably hit their game quota.

Soccer Other markets and exotics

Other markets offered by most bookmakers include:

  • Total Goals – This is a multi-way market where you can bet on how many goals will be scored in the match. For example choose from 0-1 goals, 2-3, 4-6, or 7+ goals. Each option has unique odds.
  • Odds or Evens – This is a 2-way market on whether the number of goals scored in the match by both teams will total an odd number or an even number.
  • Half Time / Full Time- Here you predict the result of both the first half and full game. If you place a bet as DH, you’re betting the first half will draw and the full time results will be the home team winning. You can select any combination of H-Home, D-Draw, and A-Away. Each option has unique odds.
  • Correct Score – This is bet on the exact final score. Most options have big odds and this a good way to have a chance at a large payout for a small stake.
  • First Goal – this is a bet on which team or/and player will score the first goal in the match.
  • Last Goal – this is a bet on which team or/and player will score the last goal in the match.
  • Outright Markets – this is a bet on which team will win a specific league or tournament. For example you can bet on which team will win Hyundai A-league, or who will win World Cup 2014. There are odds for almost every league and competition that will have an eventual champion. As the season carries on, the odds will fluctuation according to how the teams are performing. The odds of favourites decrease but strategies like monitoring upcoming matches can be applied to make accurate predictions. For example, if the league table leader has tough matches for the rest of the season and the 2nd or 3rd position has relatively easier matches which they are expected to win, it would be wise to place outright bets on the 2nd or 3rd position each.
